Book 20/85: House of Hades by Rick Riordan

Spoiler Alert!!!!!
This book is the second most memorable book of The Heroes of Olympus series. I would say it is one of the more complex books of the series to read making some parts a little confusing. Without further a do the notes I took whilst reading.

  • The first sentence immediately starts with action. So if you are reading this before you read Mark of Athena the confusion will set in  right away.
  • 50 pages in Arachne makes her return. Setting off anger in the audience. Don’t worry Percy kills her off again in cool smooth manner.
  • 2 pages later Kelli returns. But they can’t identify her right away. Instead they call her mall girl. Then a battle begins but that is to be expected.
  • A little while later Odysseus is mentioned for the first time in this book. His legend is often referred to in both House of Hades and Sea of Monsters. (Sea of Monsters is when Percy has a quest that is almost a modern reenactment of The Odyssey)
  • This book feels like it is being written like it’s the end of a series or era the characters are often reminiscing or referring to scenes in earlier books.(We know there is still the journey to get back to Camp Half-Blood in book 5 Blood of Olympus).
  • The beginning of chapter twenty-seven is all about Jason being idolized. It annoys me he is being idolized because it is a very predictable stereotypical thing that Rick did just because Jason is a son of Jupiter he is also given praetorship because he is son of Jupiter. He is spoiled by his dad and it’s awfully annoying.
  • In an insult Octavian calls himself Emperor Nero. Grover replies with, “At least Nero can play music”. (252 Riordan) I know Octavian is really sassy, but Emperor Nero is psychotic.
  • In chapter thirty four due to Piper and Jason dating, Piper is very anxious about losing Jason. Rick has to make Piper Jason’s hero. I personally do not like Piper because of her obsessiveness and clingy ness towards specific people and completely ignoring other important people.
  • Nico shares his love for Percy. I disagree with the way Cupid made Nico come out to Jason. Nobody should out somebody else or force somebody to come out. It is an invasion of privacy. I do love that there is now a LGBTQIA+ character. I do not ship Percy and Nico as much as I ship Percy and Annabeth but Nico’s love for Percy is adorable!!!!!!
  • In chapter sixty-two Bob is unsure about his identity of Bob or Iapetus he asks Percy for help. Percy’s response is very thoughtful. He takes a minute to think this through and ultimately tells Bob that it is his choice not Percy’s. I think this moment is very sweet and admirable. It reminded me of a parent that makes all their child’s decisions for them but eventually sends them off to college to be themselves. But ten times sweeter and more admirable.
  • Annabeth gave a very good piece of advice to herself and it’s probably really good for type one people or people with type one tendencies. Remember to take a step back and learn from other leaders. You don’t need to lead everyone or anyone. You don’t need to control anyone or anything. People can control themselves. Don’t lead until you can control yourself first.
  • Hazel also gave a nice piece of advice. Take a deep breath. Explore, learn, observe once you do that you can choose your reaction and follow through with a smart calm reaction.
  • I forgot to mention Annabeth and Percy’s hilarious scene using Percy’s sword disguised as a pen Anaklusmos (Riptide) being used as a pen for the first time.
  • Hazel and Leo have a very relaxing relationship with each other. I just can’t get over the two of them together. Their scenes are my favorite. Sorry Percabeth extreme supporters there great but Hazel and Leo have the best connection because of Sammy. Just to be clear Leo and Hazel are not dating just cute friends.

That is what I got for this book! Overall this book is a good book. About a 3.75/5 stars. I would recommend this series to anyone.
